This year de Majo Illuminazione celebrates sixty years in business, six decades committed and dedicated to producing art glasswork which ever since the time of its founder, Guido de Majo, have made this company one of the most influential in the production of Murano glass.
Lucio de Majo has taken up his paternal heritage, dedicating meticulous care in combining the unequalled Murano glassmaking tradition with contemporary design trends.
Sixty years of business is a major achievement for any company and to celebrate this important event, we have, amongst other things, designed and created a new chandelier.
This is how Roberto Assenza, architect, developed his project “Burning Bush” a chandelier with a powerfully evocative theme.
The Bush which appears before Moses and burns without dying, as narrated in The Book of Exodus; the manifestation of the Divine through fire and through light.
Saint Catherine’s monastery was built on the site where Moses saw the burning bush and a chapel still encloses the living bush today, and it is also the site where the three major Religions converge (this monastery also encloses a Mosque).
Beyond the theological connotations related to this event, this theme has always been of great interest to artists who have represented it, just think of the numerous Orthodox icons which depict this subject.
As our business is lighting and wanting to celebrate sixty years of activity, we felt it would be stimulating to translate and to interpret this theme through traditional Murano glassmaking techniques.
This led us to choose, what is known as the “Rezzonico” model for the chandelier branches, which derives from the famous Venetian palace which still houses the originals and ideal from both a technical perspective given he overall size of the chandelier with its 240 cm diameter, and from a design perspective allowing the branches of the bush to freely extend in all directions.
And then colour, the colour of Murano glass!
Colour has been perfectly dosed to give the idea of a burning bush.
The spectrum of colours goes for green at the base and develops through red, orange and yellow with a chromatic crescendo that only master Murano glassmakers are able to reproduce.
And then there is the gold; the entire chandelier is rich in pure gold, the only metal that assimilates light, incorruptible, and explodes into 704 tendrils around 128 lamps, creating sparkles of transfigured light.
